Mara

Mara curled up on the bed, one of the fur blankets wrapped around her shoulders. While her body shook, she still tried to move. Repeatedly the guard he called Kaia had to command her, compelling her to stay. But she knew if she kept pushing against the guard’s magic it would drain her. Keep moving. Keep resisting. Mara would make this hell for them if that’s what it took to get her freedom. The king pulled himself through the window, the guard stepping back. Kaia seemed a little unsteady on her feet.

“My commands are already wearing off on her,” the guard noted, taking another one of the blankets from the bed and offering it up to the king. Mara felt the order loosening, pulling herself from the comfort of the bed once more.

“Sit, would you?” the king huffed, taking the blanket from the woman. Instead of placing it on his own body he moved to drape it across Mara’s shoulders. “Yes, her power is quite strong. She overpowered me with her persuasion last night. That’s how she got away.”

Mara huffed. She happily took the compliment but would appreciate it more if they didn’t talk about her like she wasn’t in front of them on the bed.

“Corvo, would you mind?” the king asked.

“On it.” The cat plopped down from the shelf, tail twitching as a snowflake landed on the tip of his forehead. Corvo’s violet eyes glowed effervescently, similar in the way that a fae’s would when using magic. The same hue circled him, the cat turning his nose towards the window as a violet barrier covered the shattered opening. “Should last a few hours,” the cat yawned, trotting off.

Mara slowly shifted her legs to the side of the bed. With the king distracted by the . . . the magic cat . . . this was her time to move. She tried to creep as quietly as possible, but there were so many blankets surrounding her body. The king instantly turned his head towards her. A frown skewed across his face as he commanded her once more. “Stay there. Rest. Get warm.”

The guard sighed, pinching the bridge of her nose as she watched the back and forth between them. “How exactly do you plan on holding her here?” She shifted her hips to the side, arms crossing in front of her chest. Mara glanced over, slightly uncomfortable at the scrutinizing gaze of this woman. Was she his lover?

“That is a great question.” The king let out a light sigh, pulling himself away from the fae as he headed back towards the window.

“Vareck.” Mara watched as the woman named Kaia called the king by his first name, turning her head towards the deranged man. “She doesn’t want to be here.”

The king’s mouth pressed into a thin line, holding out his hands. “What do you want me to say?”

“Well, for one thing, a solution that doesn’t involve her being trussed up like a turkey.” Kaia sighed, leaning her neck into the palm of her hand.
